Nobody wants to have an unsightly beer belly, but sometimes we go through periods in our life where we just let ourselves go. However, fortunately, there are a number of ways to get rid of an unwanted beer belly.
How to Get Rid of a Beer Belly
The single best way to get rid of a beer belly is to lose body fat overall until the adipose (fat)tissue in the area recedes enough that you no longer have a beer belly. There is considerable variance in individual rates of body fat accumulation in different areas, resulting in great differences in beer belly aggregation. This is why, for example, someone else may not have a beer belly while you do, even though they are relatively more overweight than you. It is due to these individualized variances that there are different rates of storing fat in the upper abdominal area. Since the body naturally stores body fat in the upper abdominal region after a certain level of body fat is achieved, it stands to reason that the reverse is also true.
Similarly, your body will lose body fat naturally from the upper abdominal area after a certain level of body fat overall is lost. Of course, there are also cosmetic procedures that can cause specific localized fat loss in the upper abdominal region. These procedures are really the only way to selectively lose fat from the upper abdominal area without losing body fat overall. Having said that, these procedures may be preferable to some who do not want to lose body fat overall. Cosmetic procedures for localized upper abdominal area fat loss include cryolipolysis and laser lipolysis.
Best Ways to Lose Body Fat
There are a number of ways to lose body fat, but just about all of them involve behavioral changes on your part. You will have to change your dietary and exercise habits no matter what. In fact, even with cosmetic procedures that require virtually no effort on your part, changes in diet and exercise habits are necessary to maintain the loss of body fat. However, there is no reason you shouldn’t take advantage of all the resources available to you to lose body fat, so we have a list of fat-loss methods we have prepared for you to read and learn from.
Diet & Exercise
The single most reliable way to achieve fat loss is by adjusting your diet and activity levels. You need to intake fewer calories (a calorie is a unit of energy) than you are expending daily in order to achieve fat loss. When you eat fewer calories than you expend, you are in a state called a negative energy balance, and so long as you remain in a negative energy balance you will lose weight. You would typically enter your height and weight into a calculator that will determine your basal metabolic rate (BMR) and then, from this, calculate your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE). Your TDEE is how much energy in calories you expend every day, and if you eat less than this, you will lose body fat. There are plenty of online calculators that can calculate your BMR and TDEE for you, so all that remains for you to do is track your daily food intake to make sure it is below your TDEE. There are many apps and online resources that will track your daily food intake for you.
Counseling
Sometimes psychological problems can lead to weight gain. For example, there is a mental condition called “binge eating disorder,” which compels people with it to binge eat, oftentimes leading to severe weight gain. Furthermore, even if a mental illness isn’t the reason for your beer belly, many people have an unhealthy psychological relationship with food. These people comfort themselves when they are sad or bored by eating, leading to weight gain and potentially a beer belly, and it is for this reason that seeking treatment with a mental health professional can help people lose weight. A mental health professional will help you get to the root of the problem and address why you are overeating, and will consequently help you lose body fat. Mental health counseling is just one of the many tools in your arsenal for permanent fat loss.
Weight Loss Medication
There are certain medications called GLP-1 agonists that imitate the bodily hormone responsible for the feeling of satiety, resulting in patients treated with it being less hungry overall. These medications imitate a hormone called incretin, which is responsible for feeling full. Consequently, when treated with this medication, weight loss through caloric restriction is easier because the patient is not as hungry and remains full for longer. Since you are less hungry on this medication, it is easier to restrict yourself to manageable portion sizes, leading to easier weight loss. This means that unless your eating issue is totally psychological it will be easier to lose weight, as you will not have nearly as many cravings.
Cryolipolysis (Fat Freezing)
Fat freezing, also called cryolipolysis, is a medical procedure in which fat cells in your body are frozen in order to eliminate them. this is done through the use of a cryolipolysis device, which will be clamped onto the area you desire to lose fat from and will expose the fat cells to freezing temperatures that will destroy the fat cells without destroying the skin cells underneath. The purpose of this procedure is localized fat loss without overall body fat loss. However, there is a known complication called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, in which the amount of fat in the area treated actually increases. For this reason, this treatment is riskier than other cosmetic interventions, such as laser lipolysis.
Laser Lipolysis
This procedure, also referred to as “laser lipo,” involves the application of a low-intensity laser to the fat areas you wish to lose. Lasers can generate singular-directional light and heat to a minimal area. With laser lipo, the technician will target the cell with the laser. The laser penetrates the skin, reaches the targeted fat cells, and bores a tiny pore into the cellular membrane. In addition to creating the small hole, the laser emulsifies (melts) the lipids inside the cell, which allows them to seep through the pore.
The body’s lymphatic system then naturally disposes of the lipids. Emerald Laser by Erchonia works differently from other laser lipolysis methods. Emerald’s system uses ten 532 nanometer lasers to target fat cells. While the system allows the cells to drain, they remain intact. Other laser systems destroy the fat cells, which can lead to fatty deposits developing in other areas of the body.
Additionally, Emerald Laser is relatively painless when compared to other laser systems. Most patients don’t feel anything at all. Laser lipolysis is a minimally invasive weight loss method that targets body fat exclusively. It is innovative and relatively new. Laser lipolysis by Emerald Laser is the first FDA-approved laser lipolysis process.
